Colistin, also known as polymyxin E, belongs to the class of polypeptide antibiotics known as polymyxins. It is a decades-old drug but due to its kidney toxicity, it fell out of favor in human medicine. It remains one of the last resort antibiotics for multidrug-resistant gram negative bacteria in hospital ICU settings.
